Η Νίκη της Σαμοθράκης is a marble sculpture by an unknown artist of the Hellenistic Era that was found in the sanctuary of the Great Gods in Samothrace. The sculpture represents the winged Goddess Nike.
To date, along with the Parthenon Marbles currently in the British Museum, Greece has made several attempts to have Nike Victory of Samothrace returned to Greece, without any success. The sculpture has been on display at the Louvre Museum since 1884.
The Ottoman sultans during the years of Ottoman rule, made foreign policy decisions with Greek antiquities. In 1863, Samothrace, whose inhabitants were slaughtered when they revolted in 1821 was under Ottoman occupation and Sultan Abdul Aziz, made arrangements with the French and later with the Austrians, allowing them to transport half of Samothrace to their home countries.
We have hope that one day Η Νίκη της Σαμοθράκης will be returned to Greece.
